Beginning at the Beginning

While I have been a hand bookbinder for three years, I am brand new at executing paper treatments for conservation. Being the autodidact that I am, I have been absorbing (no pun intended!) everything I can find on the subject, so that I can expand my little bindery into serious paper conservation and restoration.

So far, so good. Just like bookbinding, I have made some epic mistakes at first. The key is being kind to yourself and allowing room for “experimentation failure.” I keep reminding myself of Thomas Edison’s quest for the perfect bulb filament and I press through the mistakes to greater learning. Along the way, I ignore the haters, who scoff at my naivete. They must have forgotten that they once were as clueless as me!
